AUSTIN--The Texas Senate today gave preliminary approval with a 20-9 vote to SB 182 authored by Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston), which would require doctors performing abortions to make an ultrasound image available to a woman at least two hours before proceeding with the abortion procedure. The bill does not require that the woman view the ultrasound, but aims to ensure that woman are given what is necessary for a fully informed decision in regard to their healthcare and medical treatment.
The Senate voted to approve the bill on second reading. It is expected that the Senate will give final approval tomorrow. The House companion is HB 36 by Rep. Frank Corte (R-San Antonio).
"We are very happy to hear that the Senate has supported SB 182 with preliminary approval," says Joe Pojman, Ph.D., executive director of Texas Alliance for Life. "This is a good and necessary bill that will help enable women to make fully informed decisions about their medical care."
Early in the day, the Senate gave preliminary approval to SB 1098 by Sen. John Carona (R-Dallas) to create a specialty license plate with the message "Choose Life" to promote infant adoption. The House companion is HB 109 by Rep. Larry Phillips (R-Sherman).

In three years we have equipped 120 pregnancy care centers to work with men and have placed over 450 male mentors into fields of harvest nationwide reaching men in need. This movie will greatly eclipse that mark,” said Kurt Ramspott, founder of Guys For Life.

EU Wants to Prosecute Bush and the CIA over Torture

According to a report posted by Craig Whitlock of the Washington Post Foreign Service
- European prosecutors in Berlin are likely to investigate CIA and Bush administration officials on suspicion of violating an international ban on torture if they are not held legally accountable at home, according to U.N. officials and human rights lawyers.
My question is this: if they think Bush and the CIA are bad, when are they going to hold the U.N.'s own renegade members responsible for the torturous beheadings, beatings, stonings, rapes and other human violations aimed at Christians, Americans, and Jews. When are they going to hold Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or the other thugs accountable. If they are going to prosecute America's past president on a political witch hunt, then they need to likewise go after every one of the world's thugs who are terrorizing this world.
Before they take the speck out of our eye, I suggest they take the log out of their own eyes.
Sadly in other news, President Obama yesterday declined to rule out legal consequences for Bush administration officials who authorized the harsh interrogation techniques applied to "high-value" terrorism suspects, saying the attorney general should determine whether they broke the law. Of course, he did not speak to the other memos that show specifically how beneficial to the safety of this nation the policy actually was. Instead, he gave only a part of the story, enough to condemn America.
There has never been a president of these United States that has done more to embrace totalitarian regimes, to bow to the Saudi King and to sit through the ranting and raging of Hugo Cháve against America.
No wonder, the MSNMB poll showed Obama's F failure grade after 2 million plus people voted online.
Lately, he has been parading around as if he was the high and moral decision maker. Since when can a man who pushed hard for legislation that would force doctors to kill any aborted baby who lived beyond the abortion, who has opened the world to abortion and done everything he can to this nation to pull the constitutional rug out from under us, think of himself, as being moral?
From where I see it, America is in for a very rough four years. If things don't change, if the good people of America don't stand up and demand change, America may very well end up like Argentina in 2001.

Christians, Vets, Prolifers are linked to being nothing better than KKK by Marshall Messenger

"Two men: one white, one black. One brutally murdered while standing at the gate to his homestead, the other kidnapped, beaten and burned by hot tar while being covered with feathers." This headline and first paragraph quote was taken from Sunday's April 19, 2009 front page of the Marshall News Messenger, a Cox owned newspaper. At first glance it appears to be current, relevant news. Nothing could be further from the truth.
It is not until half way through the third paragraph that the reader gets a hint that the time frame for this atrocity was 1924, some 85 years ago. As a resident of Marshall and as one who has been active in the community, I have worked with hispanics, blacks, and whites to successfully achieve community goals that we all valued. It is for that very reason that I am offended to have all the hard work that has been done and is continuing to be done in Marshall by all races be tainted by misleading headlines. Publishing and editing the "other local newspaper" in Marshall, Texas, I am more aware of how various internet search engines crawl through front page headlines of various printed newspapers and grab headlines. Many fine citizens of Marshall as well as members of city government have been working diligently the past few years to develop and improve Marshall's image and further develop tourism. Tens of thousands of dollars have been spent with outside consultants on how to accomplish this difficult task and tens of thousands more are yet to be spent developing our brand. Those hard working individuals know only too well that you can do 99 things well and only 1 thing poorly and in the public's eye they will remember the 1 thing poorly done.
Does Phil Latham, publisher and editor of the Marshall News Messenger, really think this type of front page sensationalism is going to improve tourism in Marshall? Does he think it will help improve enrollment in Wiley College or East Texas Baptist University or Panola College or Texas State Technical College? If I were an out of town parent thinking of sending my son or daughter to school in Marshall and came across this headline either in printed form or on the internet, I might not take the time to read the full article. I might get the wrong impression of Marshall and elect to send my son or daughter to school else where; certainly some place where there is no racial tension.
Unfortunately, this type of "shock jock" journalism is the way many desperate printed newspapers are turning these days to help improve their dwindling readership and advertising revenue. Instead, advertisers are turning more to cable tv and the internet to get the biggest bang for their advertising buck. Hopefully, Phil Latham and the rest of his editorial staff will place sensational "historic" articles in the LIFESTYLE section of their paper and save the front page for current, relevant news.
